My questions...your answers
Published on October 31, 2006 By Question of the Day In Misc
I went to Goodwill and Salvation today. I love looking at the stuff...ok..junk. Sure, some of it is junk but there's just as much good stuff.

I bought a pair of jeans for 4 bucks. Like new jeans that weren't even worn at the knees or arse. Most times I don't find any shirts or blouses worth buying, but I love the jeans. Some even have the tags on them still. I also like to look for skirts. I love skirts. There’s nothing like the freedom a skirt offers.

I got a pair of sandals- like new - almost new for 2.99. It's not sandal buying time here in Michigan, at least not at the retail stores. Believe me I've hunted and pecked through all the clearance racks. There are just no sandals left in my size. But I'd worn my last pair out and it's just not closed shoe time for me yet. I love cold weather. I'm always warm. One way I keep myself comfortable is not wearing socks. I can only wear socks in December, January, and February. So now I have a pair of sandals to wear for the next month or so. All sprayed down with Lysol and they fit perfectly.

So, JU do you shop second hand? Would you? Do you think it’s gross to wear someone else’s used clothing or shoes?

Hey!  Ever gotten a pair of underwear with a little paper tag in it saying "inspected by number 39"?  Makes you wonder how they were inspected!

I do on occassion, but just for casual clothes (NOT Underwear!), and furniture.

(NOT Underwear!),

hahahhah I hope not!

I love browsing in second hand shops, but have not bought clothes from one, I have bought a desk, a pewter ornament and an old book from them.

The stores in my area actually get a ton of new stuff that was clearanced at the store (usually Target) but never sold. Sooooo...yes I actually have bought underwear at the second hand store...but they weren't second hand underwear...unless the inspector tested them... )

Yes I do a lot!  I haven't bought a pair of Levis retail in at least ten years.  I love a bargain and always have...no matter how much money we have in our lives, I always try to bargain shop.

I also cut and use coupons.  I just love seeing all those negatives at the bottom of my grocery bill!

I do some too but I'm usually a store brand purchaser.

I buy clothing from second hand shops fairly often. I like to keep a decent looking sport coat or two in the truck with me for when I want to go out for the evening. I usually get them from second hand shops pretty cheap, that way if they get messed up in the truck I'm not out a couple of hundred bucks (or more).

When I first starting teaching school years ago I didn't own any suits or ties. A quick trip to Goodwill took care of that.

I refuse to buy second hand shoes though. I think shoes (and underwear ) should be purchased new. I try to buy the best quality shoes or boots that I can afford as I feel that they will last longer and be better for the feet.

hmmm, come to think of it, every girlfriend I've ever had was second hand too.

mine too!

But seriously, folks . . .

I'm wearing all second-hand stuff (minus the undies) this very second. (Granted, it's my Halloween costume, but I'll totally use the shirt again - it's a nice Dillard's shirt!) But mostly I look for books and other perephenalia in the second-hand stuff around here . . . I've built a formidable collection with other's cast-offs.

The Wife and I go to Goodwill all the time. Just a couple weeks ago, I spent about 12 bucks and got 15 or 16 perfectly good articles of clothing, including a really nice sports jacket, which I got for a dollar.
She often finds, along with clothes, one or two articles of (normally ridiculously expensive) Home Interiors merchandise, which she adores, for maybe 5 or 6 bucks or less.
I get a lot of my clothes there, especially work clothes. I just don't see the point in spending the kind of scratch they want for new, when Goodwill has such good stuff there for next to nothing.
One thing I won't buy there, however, is underwear. Nah...no thanks. I know they wash it and everything, but just the very idea gives me the creeps. Mixing ball sweat just ain't for me, thanks much.

We also enjoy going yard-and-garage-saling and flea-marketing. Sometimes you can pick up some nice tools and such for a bargain.
I'm a big "Godfather" fan, and I once found a first edition of the novel at a Goodwill for a dollar. I still have it. It was minus the dust jacket, but who cares? It was a buck! I've read it at least three times since.

Second hand is first-rate, in my book.
