My questions...your answers

A big black lab followed my neighbor home. She went in her house and shut the door. I was letting my dog out and found him. It was very clear that he had several tags on his collar. I brought him inside to check him out and see if there was a number on one of the tags. He ran through the house and found the toilet. Why do big dogs like to drink out of the toilet?

He was a mile from home down a very busy 45mph street so I called the owner and he said he'd be right over to pick him up.

My neighbor opens her window and tells me how worried she is about him and how she doesn't know where he came from - "He just followed me home." I told her I had called and the owner was coming to get him. She says, "Oh good, I was so worried about him. He's such a sweet dog."

I didn't say anything to her but I wonder, if she was really "so worried" about him why she didn't look at his tags. I was just so obvious and all she did was go in the house and shut the door. People like that bug me. I know if my dog got lost I would be greatful if someone found him and called me. That's what the tags are for - DUH!!!!

Please don't pretend to care when you don't!

I love dogs.  Many of my neigbors walk thiers around the neighborhood.  But as sweet as a dog looks, I will not touch them.  You never know when they will turn and attack you.  Your neighbor was scared.  I would be as well to have a dog follow me home.  But I also would think twice (probably do it) before I got close enough to check tags on their collar.

Oh wow, yeah I totally agree. How hard is it to look at the tag and call the number?? Good for you for doing so, I am sure the owner is very grateful for your kindness.

Ditto

Doc you can generally tell within a few seconds or more if a dog is a bit "iffy" and you should not go near it.

If you are uncertain about approaching the dog follow your gut instinct and do not approach, call the authorities and they will take care of it for you.

I'm not a huge dog lover.  If one followed me home I'd check it for tags, not necessarily out of concern but more as a citizen responsibility if you will.  I don't want wild dogs in my neighborhood, possibly biting my kids, or pooping in my yard.  If I wanted poop in my yard, I'd have a dog already...heh.  If the dog didn't have tags and I didn't know it, I'd call animal control.

I have a gal pal with no kids, but FIVE dogs.  She loves those muts to pieces.  Paid for chemo for one dog that passed away.  She would pick up strays and bring them home, try to find the owners but if not found, get them to the vet, all shots, then place an ad in the paper for owners.  She gave them away for free.

She considers anyone who does less than that uncaring.

Nope, she wasn't scared. When she was talking to me out the window she said, "he's such a sweet and friendly dog." She knew. She just didn't care enough to do anything about it.
